Vapors are produced in the fuel tank due to external heat radiation or surplus fuel gaining heat before returning to the fuel tank. These vapors are captured and then purged by way of an activated charcoal filter. A purge valve is located between the intake manifold and charcoal canister, and is actuated to allow fresh air to be drawn in through the canister to purge the captured fuel vapors. A faulty canister purge valve will cause a check engine warning and is an emission relevant component.

The torque testing is performed to verify the proper impeller- shaft mating. Torque testing can detect loose impeller- shaft press fits. Water pumps are vacuum leak tested to ensure proper sealing. Medium and heavy duty trucks manufactured starting on January 1, 2010 are required to meet the EPA Emission Standards. The majority of truck manufacturers chose to use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to meet the standards. As part of SCR technology, Bosch provides the Denonxtronic 2.2 dosing system which injects urea into the exhaust which interacts with the SCR catalyst to reduce the NOx emissions level. The supply module contains a main filter which filters the urea being pumped into the dosing module. The filter needs to be replaced per the manufacturers’ scheduled maintenance requirements.

Bosch Particulate Matter (PM) sensors continuously monitor the function of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) via direct measurement of soot concentration to help reduce particulate emissions by up to 99%.
