Port injectors are positioned outside the combustion chamber – between the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor and the intake valve, with the tip of the injector sitting outside, pointing towards the combustion chamber. With port fuel injectors, the air and fuel are combined outside the combustion chamber, in the intake manifold. From there the mixture flows through the intake tract and the intake valve to the combustion chamber.

Some of the top causes for fuel pump failure are contamination (which is caused by dirt and debris entering the system from re-fueling), overheating, and fuel pump wear over time. Frequently driving on a low fuel tank can accelerate wear on the fuel pump. An interesting note – over half of all fuel pump replacements are the result of mis-diagnosis. With the new complexity of modern vehicles, several things can disable the vehicle's fuel pump (e.g., security systems, oil/fuel pressure switches, etc.), which can result in a mis-diagnosis.

Bosch Fuel Pumps are validated to E20, so you are assured a reliable performance to a standard that has been exceeding the new E15 allowance. Should the EPA expand the limitations again, the fuel pumps will already be validated.

While no maintenance is needed on injection components themselves, keeping fresh clean gasoline in the fuel tank and changing the in-line filter per the manufacturer’s recommendations are good practices.

Compared with high-pressure systems, the low-pressure system is less complex and more affordable. Thanks to its robust combustion process, gasoline port fuel injection also tolerates lower-quality fuel. The system’s maintenance-friendly design also reduces the overhead for system diagnostics.
