No! When installing an alternator, the battery should be fully recharged before vehicle use. Without a fully charged battery the alternator is being overly stressed asking it to do a job it was not designed to do. This leads to premature failure.

First, make sure the battery is fully charged. Second, check all battery cables and connections. It is good to clean any visible corrosion, but it is also necessary to perform a voltage drop test between the battery cable terminal at the battery and the opposite end of the same cable. See the Support section for a charging systems troubleshooting guide. Warning: Never disconnect a battery cable while the engine is running to "test" the alternator. Doing so can cause high voltage spikes that can damage the alternator as well as other electronics.
